Week 6

At a Glance:

  • Focus on finishing the script, which is finally complete!

  • Still stressed, but feeling more organized later in the week.

  • Potentially getting ahead if everything is completed by next week.

What was I doing?

I've spent the majority of my time continuing to try and improve my script, while also keeping up to date with my planning. On Friday I moved onto a significant part of the planning process: the Shot List. I finished the script on Wednesday, so it was a high priority for me to storyboard everything in time for the week after. I started out by annotating the shots I required directly onto the script. I figured that this was the easiest way to consider what shots were needed, as this could be crafted around the dialogue. These annotations were then transferred onto a shot list using a similar, but slightly modified, layout from the previous FMP. This page has spaces for storyboards, so this will be something I will have to complete by/during next week also. Otherwise, I have been writing up experiments and other documentation to try and get ahead.

How was I feeling?

I wrote a note to describe how I was feeling by the end of the week, and this is a good representation my mood then:

"I'll be honest, I'm not feeling fantastic. Although I've got my story completed, and the shot list is underway, the final product feels a long way off. One thing I am very worried about is losing motivation. Knock backs are especially hard to deal with when you're already feeling like you're under a lot of pressure, especially when I still haven't got an actor sorted. I need to maintain my strive for a good product, and hopefully regain some trust in myself to deliver it."

Some extra organization and commitment has helped to alleviate the pressure a little, and I do feel more confident now. However these spells of motivation loss continue to arise periodically, and this is something I should focus on avoiding if I can. Whether this be by methods of de-stressing, or additional work to feel like I have a better grasp my workload.

What were the pros and cons?

I'm happy that I've finally finished my script, as this alleviates a lot of pressure. Having this completed has allowed me to potentially become ahead. It's also given me the motivation to focus on more visual planning, as seen in my mis-en-scene audit...

Alongside this, I can also begin to look at writing other documentation, and this should now happily fall within a good timescale before filming commences. The focus on finishing the script however has unfortunately meant that the majority of this first week of planning has been taken up by this single activity.

What more could've I done?

I could've focused more on the planning document itself. While both the script and the shotlist/storyboard serve an integral part of the project, I need to ensure that I don't overlook other aspects of planning. I scheduled to create mood boards on Thursday, however I didn't do this as I was focused on another activity.

What's next?

Next week will probably involve a lot of documentation writing/write-ups. I've scheduled to have most of my documentation completed by this time in preparation for filming the week after. I'll also need to carry out more visual research, involving developing mood boards and potentially filming a rough cut to see how long the film will actually be.
