Week 8

At a Glance:

  • Productive week for filming and asset creation.

  • Mixed moods throughout the week, but working on feeling more motivated.

  • Aiming to continue filming during Week 9.

What was I doing?

The majority of this week has been dedicated to asset creation alongside two main filming days (Wednesday & Thursday). I've been utilising the college equipment in order to progressively work my way through each scenes and associated shots. I decided to cluster filming in the same locations together in order to reduce the transportation of the equipment. In the evening following filming I roughly complied together all the footage from that day. This helps to reduce the workload later in the project once all the footage is collected, as certain sections are pre-assembled and only require smaller adjustment. Doing this also serves the purpose of reviewing the quality of the footage while additionally enabling me to highlight anything that may need re-shooting due to poor mis-en-scene, poor lighting, poor acting, etc.

Otherwise, in-between and aside from days I have been creating various assets. These include a digital advertisement for the Sophie product, and a bank statement prop which James will eventually read.

How was I feeling?

I've experienced a range of emotions this week. Towards the end of the week, during the downtime I was allowing myself before attempting to continue filming for Week 9, I wrote this diary note:

I think the real scale of the virus issues hit me today. After trying to ignore the situation by masking it with a self induced increased workload, I broke down. A lot of pent up anger was released, and it resulted in a huge bout of sadness afterwards. I understand that a lot of people will feel the same right now, so I'm no different. However this breakdown really threw me. I've finally had the opportunity to put everything into perspective, and it has unfortunately made me realise that the outcome may not be what I desired. I am hopeful however that I will recover from this after some much needed relaxation time, wherever I can get this.

I feel better now, but this was realistically a much needed wake-up call. At this moment, I still plan to continue as normal as possible. I don't want all the effort I have put into gathering footage to go to waste, so I'd like to continue filming wherever possible. Working on a positive mental attitude during this time is something I am still developing, however it is my hope that with all the footage eventually gathered, I can dedicate my time to editing and crafting a product that I will be proud of considering the circumstances.

What were the pros and cons?

I'm happy that I've managed to get some filming completed this week. It's helped to provide me with a clear task and goal for the coming weeks. The quality of the footage is generally good, and I think this is helped in-part by the experiments I completed in Pre-Production and Problem Solving. However, there is one scene, set in the bedroom where it is nighttime, which didn't turn out as intended. This will have to be re-shot, talking up time that could otherwise be used for shooting new scenes.

What more could've I done?

I would've liked to have completed more filming this week, but aside from this I could've dedicated more time towards the digital/physical assets. This would've been especially useful when neither assets were ready for filming, consequently limiting the amount of shots I could record for certain scenes.

What's next?

With all the assets I need ready by now, I aim to continue filming. I'll need help from my family, so the shooting schedule will have to work around who's willing to help. There are some scenes which I could theoretically film on my own, however I like to know that the shots are in focus, and someone managing the paperwork also helps me to focus on acting. Most of Week 9 should be dedicated to filming primarily, however this may also include documentation work, or potentially some personal work alongside college tasks.
